Have laptops increased the academic achievement and intelligence of our students

This is for the Sat. session of Technology Symposium

Our students have had a wide range of access to the internet, databases, and software programs designed specifically for them. However, they do download music, movies, and play games also. The bottom line is, have these laptops increased their academic achievement and intelligence?

yes

The ability for each student to have a laptop at their disposal increases the chance of learning in multiple ways. Students learn and create educational products in a different ways, just as brain research has shown. Putting a tool in their hands that increases the types of products being produced can only enhance a students' ability to learn.

Excellent comment. The laptop is definitely a tool to awaken them to a world outside of their own. If we can only get them to use if for good and not evil. :)

In general when you have more access through laptops to the information that the students need to be successful, is should show in their academic achievements. It is how you use the tools though through proper motivation, use, and creativity, that makes the real improvement of intelligence show. The laptop should be transparent to their education, and the student's intelligence that shows through.

I agree with your point on creativity! As stated by a presenter yesterday, teachers have to ask, "how do you make your classroom not suck so bad". Allowing the students to be creative in how to demonstrate learning is key.

As an outside observer, I would contend that the use of laptops has helped your students. Supplying them with 24/7 access to technological tools seems to have created a learning environment rich with creative and engaging experiences for them. Your teachers also seem on board and excited about the use of technology.

Yes, I believe laptops have increased the academic achievement and intelligence of my students. Since most of my students struggle with reading and/or learning the language, the laptops provide many benefits for them. We use the visuals on a daily basis. Plus, some of the kids will use their laptops to translate. Some of my slower students like me to post information on Blackboard, so if they take a little longer, the entire class is not waiting for them. Being a reading teacher, the benefits of technology in classroom outweigh the obvious distractions.

I don't believe that the student academic achievement has increased because we are not tapping into new ways to teach ... yet. We are basically still using the laptops to do word processing, Internet research basic skills. Once the teachers change the way they teach then the academic achievement will change.

I don't think it directly has increased intelligence of our students. It has put information ay their fingertips. I do believe that it has created an oppurtunity for us as educators to reach the diverse learners in our classrom which can lead to increased achievement. It allows the learning process to become more differentiated, efficient, and effective. While putting a device in a students hands will not immediately increase intelligence, it will give us a multitude of ways to help the student be successful.

It has opened the world to the students. Their world does not have limitations. Knowledge is available 24.7 at their fingertips. The internet with their laptops/ cell phones has allowed them to become authors, movie producers and artists. If not used responsibly in class, laptops can be a distraction to their learning. Since they are seemingly in need of lots of entertaining and constant stimulation, the latptop offers the student the ability to achieve and be more intelligent.

I feel that if anything the laptops have helped students maintain the achievement level of previous generations by allowing them to operate and learn in a manner that they are familiar. While laptops are nessesary to keep up with the information intake methods of younger tech-savvy kids, they do not lift the achievment or intelligence levels.

I do not believe that laptops necessarily increase achievement or intelligence of our students. Many students use laptops as a distraction and in turn creates issues that the teachers has to deal with or at least keep an eye on. If used properly then a laptop can aid the student in his or her progression of their of their education. A laptop can be a great help in gaining intelligence, however many do not take advantage of the privilege of a laptop. Overall it boils down to the individual, which students who will gain in intelligence, will gain no matter what.

Side: No

I do not believe that the laptop has a general influence on the learning of the students. It is the teacher's responsibility to offer students new ways to learn, but the laptop is the tool, not the end all.
