(3rd per Media Lit) Should 17 year olds be allowed to watch rated R movies at school?

Seventeen year olds can see a rated R movie at the mall, but are not supposed to at school. Should they be allowed? What if they are in a class with underclassmen?

yes

I think it is perfectly fine for 17 year olds to watch R rated movies in school because in the real world 17 year olds are allowed to so why not in school.

I think that 17 year olds should be able to watch whatever they want. I also think that it shouldnt be restricted to 17 year olds, I think that if a student has parental consent that the students age shouldnt matter. I also think that whenever you are in high school, you become responsible for yourself and whether or not you are mature enough to watch a rated R movie.

If a student can go to a theater and watch a rated R movie, then there is no reason they can't watch one at school. However if they are in a class with underclassmen the underclassmen should be required to sign a permission slip of some sort, allowing them to see the movie. If they don't get it signed, or don't want to watch the movie (including 17 year olds) then they should be given the option of an alternate assignment.

yes because 17 year holds are exposed to worse stouf then what most rated R movies show.

I think they should be able to because we go out and watch them in the movie theater all the time, and life throws worse stuff at you than that in the movies.

If 17 year olds are allowed to watch rated R movies outisde of school, then they should be allowed to watch them in school. Rated R movies are rated R for adult content and language, and 17 year olds should be mature enough to watch them. Not allowing 17 year olds to watch rated R movies is kind of sheltering them from seeing are hearing certain things that really aren't new to anyone in today's society.

I believe anyone can watch anything they want. A 17 year old can watch a rated R movie in school if they would like to; if the movie is being shown in school, then the movie in some way has to express a moral life lesson. In school we are required to read novels whose content is just as if not not more severe than what is seen in a movie. Same goes for the underclassmen, it all comes down to the level of maturity and whether or not they can act "appropriately" when watching a reated R movie. however, if there are stricter families, the dispute can be settled simply by issuing a permission slip where they can decide along side their parents. In today's society, rated R movies are considered less explicit.

Yes 17 years olds should watch R movies in school because they can watch them at a real theater. It shouldn't make a difference whether we're in school or not. The movie should be class related though.

Of course we should be able to watch R-rated movies in school. The reason movies are rated R is because of the content in the movie which can be said as innapropriate. But I'm pretty sure everyone hears cuss words all around our school, and a lot of kids are involved in "sexual" activity. It's just a matter of the maturity level in the classrooms you're showing the movie in.

I don't really think they should show rated R movies in school because were in school to learn. If there are younger kids in the class their parents might not approve of them watching those kinds of movies.

Sure, anyone can plead that 17 year olds are old enough to see R-rated movies outside of school, but that's on their own time. They're responsible for that. At school, it's the school's responsibility. Basically, do what you want at home, you have every right to. But at school, you can do without an R-rated movie. Especially if some of the students are underclassmen. Some of their parents earnestly don't mind them watching R-rated movies. But that doesn't mean the standards are the same in every household. If their parents find out, and become angry, they're not going to go after the 17 year olds who could watch the movies, they're going to go after the school board. This whole problem could be eliminated if there were just no R-rated movies.

It's not hurting you to not be able to watch an R-rated movie. You'll live. It is so far from a vitality of life. For those who want to cry "educational purposes", there are other methods. And a teacher can recommend that you watch it, warn you that it's rated R, and if you still wish to continue, watch it when you're not at school. There are other ways to get a point across that don't require watching an R-rated movie.
